Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu Supports the Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre
On August 20, 1998, the founders of Animals Asia Foundation (AAF) signed a historic agreement to institute the Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre in Longqiao, Sichuan. What started as a charitable initiative aimed at improving the environment and living conditions of bears in China has become a successful program to this day.
Twenty years later on August 20, 2018, Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu cohosted the 20th anniversary of the signing for the Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre. In line with the center’s anniversary and the seasonal celebration of the harvest moon, the AAF announced the inauguration of Moon Bear Day, which will be celebrated yearly on August 8.
“We used to just save bears and keep them alive,” said Huang Jianhua, president of the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA). “Now we keep them alive and well.”
Colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu and members of the media celebrated with a visit to the Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre. The group of 40 participants visited the center, where they learned about the end of the bear trade, and how the center is working to rehabilitate traumatized bears.
“The children visited the Bear Memorial Hall and learned about specially-made food for the wounded bears and a few plants,” said Shuhong Fan, director of communications at the hotel. “The children were able to get close to nature and learn to care and love for animals and plants.”
In a continued effort to raise awareness for the cause and to support the center, Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu introduced a Moon Bear Package for families. Guests who book the package can stay in a bear-themed family guestroom and receive admission tickets to the center where they can learn about the initiative. The package also comes with a themed painting course, family swimming class and a cooking class.
“Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu will continue to devote itself to Our Environment by engaging our guests and colleagues,” said Fan.
Keep up the great work, Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu!
