Shangri-La Hotels Read-y To Make A Difference
At Shangri-La, our colleagues understand the importance of positive learning environments. Check out how three of our hotels helped Our Communities by hosting book drives to improve education opportunities for children in China and Europe.
On June 24, colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian collected 264 books for the Small Library Project in partnership with Kerry Group Kuok Foundation, Hong Kong (KGKF), which provides books to underfunded school libraries. This donation marks the fifth consecutive year that Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian partnered with the Small Library Project.
“We organized an event asking hotel staff to donate children books, which will be donated to a library in a remote village in the mountains,” said Cathleen Huo, assistant director of human resources at the hotel. “Compared with the children in the city, the children in the mountains have very insufficient resources. We hope this effort will help provide the children with suitable education materials.”
“As someone who grew up in the city, I might not fully realize the learning conditions of children in remote regions of China,” said Alice Shen, secretary of sales and marketing at the hotel. “But I deeply understand the importance of education and growth for young children. I hope they can find their passions through reading!”
“We will continue participating in the project with similar activities in the future,” continued Huo. “As long as we can make any improvement in the children’s educational environment, I think our efforts will continue to make a positive impact in the children’s lives.”
Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou also participated in the Small Library Project in June. The hotel collected 217 books during an on-property book donation. All books were categorized and sent to the Third Primary School of Lianzhu Town in the Mojiang County of the Yunnan Province.
“The school is located in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the country,” said Jenny Zhan, director of communications at Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou. “The national curriculum recommends students finishing their ninth year in school complete eight to 14 books per year, but the school didn’t have the inventory to support the different reading levels. We will continue to work with the school to extend their book stock, as well as diversify the book selection.”
In Europe, Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul partnered with Kitap Bankosu, a mobile book bank that travels across Turkey to donate books to libraries in underprivileged schools and hospitals in need.
“With the support of our sales and marketing team, we collected over 50 kilograms of books, which we donated to the mobile library,” said Zuhal Ornek, communications manager at the hotel. “We are honored to be a part of this significant project. Where there is education, there is future!”
Great job to our hotels helping kids around the world gain access to books!
