Kerry Hotel, Beijing Launches First MSC-Certified Menu At The Horizon Chinese Restaurant


On June 8, 2018, Shangri-La announced a corporate partnership with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the achievement of MSC Chain of Custody certification for 53 Shangri-La and sister-brand properties in Mainland China and Hong Kong. On June 15, following the announcement and in line with the group’s Sustainable Seafood Policy and responsible Rooted in Nature food and beverage initiative, Kerry Hotel, Beijing launched the first MSC-certified sustainable seafood menu in the group’s China hotel portfolio. Available at The Horizon Chinese Restaurant until the end of August, the menu features eight dishes with MSC-certified Western Australia rock lobsters from Geraldton Fishermen’s Cooperative (GFC), which uses a decades-long program of monitoring fisheries under a quota system, uses minimum size requirements and institutes a ban on catching breeding females.

“Together, GFC’s fishermen are ensuring the preservation and continuity of the fishery, guaranteeing that there will be many generations of successful Co-op fishermen to come,” said a representative from GFC.

Delicious dishes on the menu include: fried lobster with bamboo shoots and crab meat with egg; braised lobster with chive and ginger; fried lobster with onion and pepper with black bean sauce; and steamed lobster with vermicelli and minced garlic.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to present this lobster menu to our guests at Horizon as it allows us to be innovative in creating eight recipes to suit the local taste but at the same time retain the lobster’s freshness and original distinct taste,” said Stanley Yuen, The Horizon Chinese Restaurant executive Chinese chef. “We are also proud to be the first restaurant in Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts in China to use sustainable seafood ingredients that is 100% certified with MSC.”

“We are so excited to serve food that is not only sustainable and supports our environment, but is also delicious,” said Wei Wei Saw, director of communications at Kerry Hotel, Beijing. “One of my favorite dishes is the steamed lobster with vermicelli and minced garlic. It’s a simple but tasty dish that showcases the freshness and natural flavor of the lobster. The fragrant garlic and sweet juices from the lobster are wonderfully absorbed by the vermicelli and provides a soft tasty accompaniment to the dish.”
