Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka CSR Stands Out Only Two Months After Opening

From a property’s groundbreaking to welcoming guests daily, Shangri-La hotels and resorts are committed to making a positive impact on the surrounding environment and community. Since its grand opening in June, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka has been busy growing its CSR efforts on property and throughout the community.

Prior to the resort’s opening, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa hosted its first CSR initiative, the Elephant R.U.N. The initiative invited local residents to create elephant artworks using only upcycled material to help raise awareness for the plight of the Sri Lankan elephant. The resort now proudly showcases the final participants’ artwork as beautiful reminders of the species’ importance. Check out some of the artwork displayed here:

Recently, the resort opened its on-property Eco Centre that showcases unique Sri Lankan flora and fauna. During their visits, guests can learn about local wildlife and culture through informational displays, educational videos, crafts created by local residents, and a small library with a variety of books about plants and animals, which guests can check out during their stay. Children can find the artist within themselves at the craft corner by making miniature elephant sculptures with all-natural clay and paint with help from a dedicated CSR associate.

To celebrate World Elephant Day on August 12, the craft corner was abuzz as young guests created their own elephant art and participated in elephant awareness talks.

Aside from CSR efforts focusing on Our Environment, the resort is also busy engaging with Our Community. In July, the resort invited 45 children from Dehigahalanda School for a day of fun at the resort. Throughout the day, the children let their imaginations soar on the resort’s flying trapeze, bicycles and games at the pool.

“We believe the happiness of the community around the hotel is very important,” said Sureshi Chandrasena, service leader for CSR and Sustainability at Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka. “By supporting and caring for our community we can build a long term relationship while achieving sustainability goals.”

Looking ahead, the resort CSR team plans to host daily activities such as nature walks, beach cleanups and peacock feedings around the property.

Congratulations to the team at Shangri-La’s newest resort for the successful CSR initiatives. We look forward to seeing the positive impacts the CSR efforts have on the local environment and community.
