For Love of the Game: Colleagues Teach Local Children Fundamentals of Football
Whether in China or the Philippines, Shangri-La colleagues all over the world have a love for football (soccer). Mixed with a passion for service and volunteering, our colleagues are extending this love to children in their communities.
While volunteering at Tingo Elementary School on Olango Island, colleagues from Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu noticed a group of children playing football. When the colleagues asked the children why they were playing soccer, the children said the basketball courts were usually occupied and football gave them the most freedom to play, since there are many open grass areas around the school.
Following this exchange, colleagues from the resort’s football club started the Summer Football Sports Clinic at the elementary school. Our colleagues teach the children basic skills and training to develop their skills. The volunteers have developed a special bond with the children, and the team now participates in tournaments on the island.
“To teach these kids the value of teamwork and discipline, and to show them the fun side of life through the beautiful game of soccer – it’s in our nature,” said Rebmevon, a colleague who works in the security department at the resort.
Colleagues at Hotel Jen Shenyang also volunteer at a local school to teach children how to play football. In April 2015, colleagues from the hotel helped students at Shuang Taizi Hope School establish a team. The colleagues also donated team uniforms.
“We like to do anything good for the children,” said Cindy Zhang, communications manager at Hotel Jen Shenyang. “We are always trying to find some projects that help make children happy and healthy.”
Hotel Jen Shenyang is now preparing for the winter season with cold-weather uniforms.
