Ready, Set, Read! Maldives Resort Helps Build First Public Library on Meedhoo Island
Updated: Jan 31
As a hospitality brand whose name originated from a book, the mythical paradise in James Hilton’s 1933 novel, Lost Horizon, we are passionate about literature and its availability to our communities.
Starting in 2013, Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives supported the Kaaduge, a historic building on Meedhoo Island, with the intention of creating a safe place for people of all ages to read and learn. With materials provided by the resort to transform the building into the island’s first public library, the building work was completed in October 2014. But it was missing a lot of one thing: books!
The resort partnered with the TCS group to raise US $1,500 to purchase 300 children’s books, young adult books and cook books to add to the library collection. The library has almost 200 members, including many children, who would not otherwise have access to books.
We can’t wait to hear about all of the adventures these library members will dive in to! Ready, set, read!
