Shangri-La Hotel, Xian Grows Its Menus with Produce from Local Communities
With properties around the world, from the shores of the Maldives to the green karsts of Guilin, it is our duty through Rooted in Nature to support local food suppliers and serve dishes with the freshest ingredients possible to our guests. In cities like Xian that are surrounded by small rural communities, we have the opportunity to purchase fresh produce while helping the communities’ local economies.
In Xian, the apple supply has historically relied on fruit wholesalers, which did not have a clear origin nor consistent quality. To address this problem, Shangri-La Hotel, Xian began a partnership with Chunhua, the first certified Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) community in China, in 2014.
With moderate temperatures and a frost-free spring season, Chunhua has the ideal climate for growing apples. While the county grows some of the best apples in China, Chunhua remains a state-level poverty-stricken area as its remote location makes it difficult to bring their crop to buyers. Shangri-La Hotel, Xian hopes to benefit the community’s economy by purchasing directly from the farmers, ensuring a market for their delicious apples.
South of Chunhua county lies Yangling, the home of Everearth Happy Farm, the first certified organic farm in the northwest region of China. Starting in February 2015, Shangri-La Hotel, Xian has purchased fresh produce from the farm, which practices ancient natural farming techniques and produces 100 percent organic produce.
