Shangri-La Group commits to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner while balancing the interests of our diverse stakeholders. We strive to be a leader in corporate citizenship and sustainable development, caring for our colleagues and guests, seeking to enrich the quality of life for the communities in which we do business and serving as good stewards of society and the environment.

 

Shangri-La Group has unified all CSR initiatives under the umbrella brand Sustainability within five key areas: Environment, Health & Safety, Employees, Supply Chain, and Stakeholder Relations. This campaign strives to educate our stakeholders, inspire and engage our employees, enjoin our business partners and align ourselves with the local community initiatives.

 

Shangri-La Group's core Sustainability projects include Embrace and Sanctuary. Launched in September 2009, Embrace - Shangri-La's Care for People Project - commits each hotel to a five- to 10-year partnership with a chosen beneficiary focusing children's health or education programs. These projects look at the level of education and health support needed in under-privileged communities. We partner with schools, health centers or orphanages or other charities to provide them with the funding, infrastructure support, life skills training and hotel apprenticeships. For example, employees at Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta help clean, renovate and restore a local junior high school that suffers from insufficient classroom, toilet, canteen, garden and schoolyard facilities, while Shangri-La Hotel, Paris supports the non-governmental organization Sport Without Borders, which implements development programs using sports as an educational, therapeutic and awareness-raising tool.

 

The core principle underpinning Sanctuary - Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project - is to promote the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. We are present in some of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse areas of the world. We understand that we have a responsibility to look after the biodiversity of these pristine places for future generations to enjoy. We partner with local governments, NGOs and communities around our resorts to protect the surrounding habitat and its flora and fauna. Properties work on individualized projects which are developed, tracked and monitored after a biodiversity assessment. To date, there are 15 Sanctuary projects in place.

 

At Shangri-La Group, we believe there is no greater act of hospitality than embracing a stranger as our own. Whether a stranger be a guest, a member of our surrounding community, or an animal in one of our nature reserves, we hope to create a healthy, peaceful and safe home for all.
